Memeber of Parliment Candidates for Redditch in the 2010 election

Redditch Election Background:

Before the 6th May 2010 This seat, had been held by Labour's Jacqui Smith, the former Home Secretary, since it was created back in 1997. Leading up to the 2010 election it was 47th on the list of targeted areas by the conservatives and with a majority in the last election of just 2163 it was expected to be another close battle between Jacqui and Karren.

2010 was also a first for The British National Party who contested the seat.

The Redditch County Constituency is the whole area of Redditch Borough Council plus the Inkberrow Ward of Wychavon District Council and will have additional areas at the Parliamentary General Election in 2010 from the previous election in 2005 to include, Ab Lench, Abbots Morton, Church Lench, Hanbury, Rous Lench, Stock and Bradley Green.

Out of a possible 68,577 possible voters in the Area 43,768 (63.8%) turned out on the 6th May 2010 to place their vote up just point two percent on the previous election.

Local Candidate Results

Redditch Borough Council has six new councillors following local elections on Thursday 6th May 2010.

Elections were held in the Redditch wards Abbey; Astwood Bank and Feckenham; Batchley and Brockhill; Central; Church Hill; Crabbs Cross; Greenlands; Headless Cross and Oakenshaw; Lodge Park, and Winyates. A by-election was also triggered in Crabbs Cross by the recent death of Cllr Jack Field.

The local election count took place on the 7th May 2010 in the Redditch Town Hall and resulted in the Conservatives retaining overall control of Redditch Borough Council gaining 4 additional seats, with the Liberal Democrats gaining an additional seat and the British National Party loosing their seat for the ward of Winyates.

The number of seats on the Council is now:

9 Labour

17 Conservative

3 Liberal Democrat
